Black Heroes A-Z
Teacher Instructions:
February is Black History Month. During the month we will be learning about
several black Americans who fought oppression and made an unselfish contribution
to society. We will be studying inventors, civil rights leaders, and great
writers/poets. By the end of the month we will have studied 26 amazing
black Americans.
Each student will be assigned a famous black American to research, learn about and create a portfolio on. The remaining 13 Americans will be taught in class. The requirements for the portfolio are listed below.
Portfolio Requirements:
Materials: (white with clear pocket) 1" 3 ring binder
encyclopedia, computer or other reference tool
crayons
pencil
notebook paper
drawing paper
Directions:
1. The cover of the portfolio should be a head and shoulders drawing of the
assigned black American designed by the student.
Page 1: Table of Contents
Page 2: One-page biography of the famous black American
Page 3: Half page explaining what the student learned.
Page 4: Bibliography (list all references used)
Page 5: Poem about assigned black American (cinquain, haiku, and verse)
The information inside the portfolio doesn't have to be typed as long as it is written legibly. It may be written in either print or cursive. The cover must be the student's own work. The cover must be colored and cannot be traced. While I highly recommend parents help their children with this assignment, I encourage parents to let the children do the work.
